Conference Championship Weekend

This is Conference Championship weekend, what every team in the country comes into the season playing for.  As a Gator,  I am thrilled that we are playing in December again.  There isn’t anyone, aside from Coach Mac and the team, that thought this was possible.  It has been an incredible season overall, as a football fan, but watching this team exceed expectations has been utterly thrilling.

We have 5 great conference championship games this weekend.  College Gameday will kick off in the morning from Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship game which is a play-in game for the College Football Playoff between #4 Iowa and #5 Michigan State.  From a playoff perspective, this game will definitely have the most impact.  See below for my attempt to help you navigate your way through the Saturday college football schedule, pointing out the best games to watch.  It’s the Who, What, When and Where for Conference Championship weekend.

2015 Upset Tracker: With the regular season wrapped up, at least for the conferences that have a championship game, here is the final tally on the year.

This season we saw 54 upsets, averaging 4+ per weekend.  Of those upsets, 21 (39%) were top 10 teams.  What a year, I called it the Year of Parity and I think these numbers show that.  It’ll be interesting to re-examine the potential parity heading into next season.

Last weekend my picks were 13-6, leaving me at 70% so far this season.

BMW’s Projected Final 4 – After Week 13:

Week 12: College Football Viewing Guide

This weekend has to be the best yet.  The slate is stacked with great games.  We are coming off back to back “Upset City” weekends.  Fourteen Top 25 teams have been upset in the last two weekends.  This weekend College Gameday heads to Columbus for this weekend’s headliner between Top 10 foes in the Big 10.  #9 Michigan State heads 250 miles SE to take on #3 Ohio State.  This is the first of several decisive games in the Big 10 over the next few weeks.  Not to be outdone, there are five other big time ranked match-ups.  Oh Glory!!!  November College Football is epic.

Upset Tracker: The Upset Tracker continues to be really busy this month.  November has, no doubt, lived up to the historical trend of being the craziest month of the season.

We have had two weekends in a row with seven upsets, however week 11 also saw four Top 10 teams go down.  The craziest weekend yet.  Which is the exact same thing that I said last week, November is bananas!  And, I am picking 7 outright upsets of the 10 games on my list for this weekend.

So far this season there have been 41 upsets, averaging 3.7+ per weekend.  Of those upsets, 17 (41%) have been top 10 teams.

Below I’ll attempt to help you navigate your way through the Saturday college football schedule, pointing out the best games to watch.  It’s the Who, What, When and Where for Week 12.

Week 11: College Football Viewing Guide

The month of mayhem is in full swing, with 7 upsets last weekend.  College Gameday will be in Wac(k)o for the shootout between #12 Oklahoma and #6 Baylor.  By far the biggest game so far this season.  We also have two other great ranked match-ups, it is another good weekend for some college football.

Upset Tracker: The quietest weekend (week 9) was followed by the most upsets we’ve seen on one weekend so far this year (7).  3 of those being Top 10 teams.  So far this season there have been 34 upsets, still averaging 3+ per weekend.  Of those upsets, 13 (or 38%) have been top 10 teams.

The Upset Tracker will be busy this month.  November is historically the craziest month of the season, by a good margin.  Four weekends in a row with epic finishes.

  1. Miami’s improbable, controversial, multi-lateral return touchdown
  2. Michigan State’s “Gift Six”
  3. Georgia Tech’s “Kick Six” Part 2 against Florida State.
  4. NEW Arkansas’ “Throwin’ up a (Lateral) Prayer” on 4th down in OT

Where will the epic finish be this weekend?

Week 10: College Football Viewing Guide

November!  The month of mayhem has begun.  College Gameday will be in Tuscaloosa for the melee between #2 LSU and #4 Alabama.  By far the biggest game so far this season.  We also have two other BIG ranked match-ups, it is a great weekend for BIG time college football.

Upset Tracker: It was the quietest weekend yet, on the upset front.  We did have 2 more upsets last weekend (#22 and #23).  So far this season there have been 27 upsets, still averaging 3 per weekend.  Of those upsets, 10 (or 37%) have been top 10 teams.

The Upset Tracker is sure to be a lot busier this weekend.  Three weekends in a row with epic finishes.

  1. Miami’s improbable, controversial, multi-lateral return touchdown
  2. Michigan State’s “Gift Six”
  3. Georgia Tech’s “Kick Six” Part 2 against Florida State.

Week 9: College Football Viewing Guide

College Gameday will be in Philadelphia visiting the site of our only ranked match-up this weekend between #9 Notre Dame and #21 Temple.  The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is going down in Jacksonville this weekend, where my #11 Gators can clinch the SEC East with a win over UGA.

There are several other intriguing match-ups not to sleep on.  #8 Stanford visiting Pullman is no cake walk, Leach has pulled off crazier wins.  #18 Houston gets a game versus an SEC opponent (Vandy).  And the Thursday night game between WVU and #5 TCU is sure to be a nail biter.  While half of the Top 10 teams are on BYE this week, but let me remind you…

We had 4 more upsets last weekend (#3, #9, #15 and #20).  So far this season there have been 25 upsets, still averaging 3 per weekend.  Of those upsets, 10 (or 40%) have been top 10 teams.

Week 8: College Football Viewing Guide

The lone match-up between ranked teams features two teams trying to recover from losses last week – #15 Texas A&M heads down to The Grove to face #24 Ole Miss.  Both of these teams need a bounce back win.  With the light schedule, College Gameday is in Harrisonburg, VA for the big FCS showdown between #5 James Madison and #13 Richmond.  Though the FBS schedule seems rather light, let me remind you…

We had 3 more upsets last weekend (#9, #13 and #21).  So far this season there have been 20 upsets, still averaging 3 per weekend.  Of those 20 upsets, 8 (or 40%) have been top 10 teams.  I’ll be keeping my eye on #6 Clemson travelling down to Miami, #3 Utah visiting USC in The Coliseum and #9 Florida State heading to ATL to take on Georgia Tech.  All three of these Top 10 teams are on the road and one faces an early start.

Week 7: College Football Viewing Guide

Headlining this weekend is FIVE games between ranked teams, along with a whole slew of other great games.  College Gameday is in Ann Arbor for the finally relevant Big 10 game between #7 Michigan State and #12 Michigan in The Big House.  There may be two even bigger games in the SEC, as there are two Top 10 battles going down.

So far this season there have been 17 upsets, that is an average of 3 per weekend.  Of those 17 upsets, 7 (or 41%) have been top 10 teams.  Last weekend seemed light, but we still had 4 upset…with the biggest being #10 Oklahoma going down to UR Texas.  With the loaded slate of games this weekend, there is bound to be plenty of craziness.

Week 6: College Football Viewing Guide

After a huge week 5, this weekend is a bit of a breather… but if we’ve learned anything from the first 5 weeks, it is to NOT take a breather.  The amount of upsets and near upsets each week has made for some epic watching each weekend.

Two games between ranked teams are on deck this weekend, with quite a few games carrying significant meaning.  College Gameday is in Salt Lake City for the big Pac-12 game between #23 California and #5 Utah.

BMW’s (sure to change) Projected Final 4 – After Week 5:

  1. Ohio State – No change here, though I am concerned that the offense hasn’t clicked yet.  They need to figure out the QB spot ASAP.  Good news for the Buckeyes is they don’t face anyone of substance until the end of the year.
  2. Alabama – They got past Georgia (thanks to the best 8-4 coach of all time), this team will be tough to beat here on out.  Facing A&M on the road will be tough, can Saban’s defense finally slow down a good spread offense?  Then they get LSU at home and are built to stop an offense like the Tiger’s.  If they can slow down Fournette (a big IF) this will force Brandon Harris to beat them… not likely.  The SEC West is still far from settled…
  3. Clemson – New team here.  This team looks to be the most complete in the ACC.  The schedule sets up nicely for the Tigers to roll into the playoff undefeated.
  4. Baylor – Still leaning with the Bears here.  Admittedly they have played a patty-cake schedule to date, but this team looks to be playing with a chip on their shoulder.  As I said last week, the Big 12 is far from determined, especially with the “dark horse” of OU looking better and better each week.  The Bears get OU at home, that game may decide the conference.

Just outside the mix:

  1. LSU – No change.  Leonard Fournette looks more impressive each week.  They will have to ride him to the playoff, because the passing game looks average.  4 big tests remain: Florida at home, @ Alabama, @ Ole Miss and Texas A&M at home.
  2. Texas A&M – No change.  Got a good win against a solid Mississippi State team last weekend.  Have a bye week (great timing) before the Crimson Tide roll into town next weekend.  This is the next big tilt to help sort out the SEC West.
  3. Utah – This team continues to impress.  The Pac-12 has already been bonkers, if any team can escape the chaos this may be that team.
  4. Oklahoma – Still flying under the radar a bit, with TCU and Baylor getting all of the national love for the Big 12.  Still have a tough road trip to Baylor, but get TCU at home.

God bless and Go Gators!

Week 5: College Football Viewing Guide

This weekends slate of games is loaded.  Five big Top 25 match-ups await!  We’ll start to sort out some contenders and reveal the pretenders.  College Gameday is in Death Valley for a great game between #6 Notre Dame and #12 Clemson.  Clemson has one of the best entrances in all of college football (see video below), and don’t miss the pregame as I’m sure ABC will feature this again.  Viewing Guide below.

Last weekend had some exciting finishes, three to be exact.  What did we learn?

TCU found a way to pull one out in Lubbock.  What a heart breaker for the Red Raiders.  Tech had the Horned Frogs on the ropes and Aaron Green has a deflected pass fall in his hands in the back of the end zone with 23 seconds left.  Great finish #1 of last weekend.

Eleven years in a row – Florida over Tennessee.  My Gators found a way to win a stunning game.  Had me hooting and a hollering!  What a finish and we had an offense sighted in Gainesville again – On 4th-and-14, Antonio Callaway broke off a 63-yard TD reception with 1:26 remaining.  Great finish #2 of last weekend.

Two years in a row – Arkansas loses to A&M in OT.  A&M has owned the 4th Quarter the last two years.  Bielema has to continue to regret his comments after week 1, week 2 his team suffered this seasons biggest upset, week 3 his team gets beat by an average Tech team (gets called out by Kingsbury) and then in week 4 loses in OT to the Aggies for the second year in a row.  The losing streak could very well reach six games before the next paycheck game arrives in week 8.  Great finish #3 of last weekend.

Is Muschamp the cancer that kills great programs?  Texas… Florida… Auburn…

Speaking of Texas, goodness gracious… losing two weeks in a row due to special teams gaffes is brutal.  Two weeks ago they missed the game-tying extra point (and had all the momentum) and last week the punter dropped the snap which resulted in handing Oklahoma State the game winning FG.  The good news is they seem to have finally found their next QB – Jerrod Heard looks to be a good one.

Last weekend my picks were 6-3, leaving me at 79% so far this season!

BMW’s College Football Playoff Top 4 – After Week 4:

  1. Ohio State – No change.  This team looks bored, but don’t worry… when it matters Urban will have this team ready to go.
  2. Ole Miss – No change.  In the driver seat for the SEC West right now, but the division is loaded.  LSU, Texas A&M and Bama will be breathing down the Rebels neck all year.  If Bama can get past Georgia this weekend… watch out.
  3. USC – Making a change here.  Falling back on another preseason pick here with USC.  Got down on them after losing to Stanford, still think this team is loaded and can navigate their schedule.  I replaced Notre Dame here, they play in 2 weeks.  We’ll know soon enough if ND is really the best team Kelly has put together.  ND has already overcome more than any other team could, lots of key injuries.  That has me thinking USC pulls out the game in 2 weeks.
  4. Baylor – I am going to fall back on my preseason pick of the Bears.  The Big 12 is far from determined, especially with the “dark horse” of OU looking better and better each week.  The Bears get OU at home, so I’ll lean with Baylor today.

Contenders:

  1. LSU – No change.  Leonard Fournette will win the Heisman.  Herschel Walker stated this week that Leonard is better than he was… HUGE praise.
  2. Texas A&M – No change.  The D still has some question marks and will be tested this weekend by a mobile QB – Dak Prescott this week.
  3. Georgia – No change.  I hope Bama beats them this weekend, can’t stand the Bulldogs being up here.  If they beat Bama, they’ll be favored in the rest of their contests until the SEC Championship game.
  4. Notre Dame – Dropped from above.  I really like this team and even find myself rooting for them, given all the injuries they’ve had this year.  This team would be a Top 4 no-doubter with their full cast.
